SEVENTEEN

Millie

I was alone when I awoke in Duke’s bed.

The musky aroma of simmering hot sex still lingered in the air around me. The activities of last night were evident all over my body and face. It felt like his stubble had exfoliated every dead skin cell from head to toe. Every single one of my muscles was as sore as if I’d been through a Pilates bootcamp. My bum was still tingling. But the lady part that felt truly tender and swollen was my rapidly-beating heart.

As I stretched beneath the masculine, charcoal-gray sheets, I glanced over at the bedside table nearest me. I noticed a glass of water beside a little jar that was filled with a tiny arrangement of fragrant herbs. Surely, I would have noticed if they’d been there before. He must have left them there this morning.

I sat up and checked for a note, on some level fearing Duke may have abandoned me now that he no longer needed me as a wedding date. At the same time as I confirmed there was no goodbye note, I heard movement in another room. I smelled coffee. I saw a very large, red and black T-shirt spread out at the end of the bed. I rolled over and buried my face into Duke’s pillow, inhaling the Duke molecules that remained on the fabric. I was now safe to reminisce about how gentle and caring he had been with me at the end of the night—and all through it, really. He almost seemed grateful that I had submitted to him like that.

What was it about this man that made me come alive for him in this way? I wanted to give and get, take and be taken, tease and be tormented—I wanted him to want me more than anything and to tell me what he wanted so I could offer all of it to him. I trusted him not to hurt me, but what I did not expect was for him to show me how much he cared while he was being rough with me, whether he realized he was doing it or not.

I would not have missed this weekend with Duke for the world. I really did have a ball at the wedding, with Duke’s teammates and their wives and girlfriends. They were all gorgeous, brilliant, remarkable women (obviously, I fit right in). Duke was so lucky to have this vast family of fit, extraordinary people to work with all the time. I envied him. I’d heard Hannah and Charlie use the term “WAGs,” and they explained that it stood for Wives and Girlfriends of famous athletes. They told me I was a WAG—the league’s only wizardess WAG. I wasn’t really, but I found myself wishing I could be.

It had never occurred to me to be categorized or defined by who I was dating. It was odd that those women were, because they were all so marvelous and well-defined on their own. But they seemed very pleased about their WAG status.
